| Scott Gilkeson is an expert in the area of
Human-Computer Interaction, including interface design, multimedia computing, technical
management and systems analysis. He is also responsible for consulting and training. He is
the Director of Design, Eastern Region, at Cognetics Corporation, and in that capacity
oversees a staff of designers working on projects from Boston to Atlanta. Industry Affiliations:
Background
User Interface Design. Scott has over 12 years of experience designing
user interfaces for platforms like Microsoft, Macintosh, OS/2, UNIX/X-Windows (Motif),
DOS, and VAX. He has designed applications for preschoolers to satellite network
engineers, and he has worked with Dr. Ben Shneiderman at the
University of Marylands Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory.
Scott has a MS in Computer Science from George Mason University.
"Confidence in your products basic concept is the key
ingredient to building a consistent and successful user interface."
Computer Science. Scotts background in software engineering -
C++, Pascal, PLM, Fortran, BASIC and assembler - makes him a particularly skillful liaison
between management and technical staff. Mr. Gilkeson is also proficient with a number of
tool kits for screen design and prototype implementation.
"A solid software background makes it possible to work with both
developers and upper management, building a bridge between the two."
Favorite Strategies
Rapid Prototyping: A useful aid to getting a design project off to a
quick and correct start is to develop an early prototype that illustrates the breadth of
the product and goes into detail for one or two critical tasks. Navigational issues become
apparent early, and essential use cases are guaranteed to be included. Rapid review, user
testing, and iteration lead to a polished, usable final design.
Vision and Strategy: In addition to expertise in requirements
gathering, Scott helps clients work out exactly what their products should be. His years
of project management experience allow him to chart the course to realize the
projects vision and provide guidance on the best way to turn it into reality.
Project Spotlight
A major financial company needed to make their call centers both more efficient and
effective. Scott combined extensive user analysis and rapid prototyping to ensure that all
stakeholders agreed with the final design. He also noted that some call center employees
had accessibility problems and addressed their needs in the design.
Novartis needed to make vast amounts of
information accessible to its employees without overwhelming them. Scott devised an
architecture that got the right information to the right people while keeping sensitive
material private. He helped the clients workgroup to focus on a common goal and work
together in creating a communication tool for all Novartis project teams. Novartis used
the tool as a model throughout the company, adapting it to many of its divisions. |
