Terraforming Mars by Paul S. Hoffman

It is sometime in the latter half of the next century. Lonely human outposts have been established on Mars. This base occupies a roofed-over crater on the plains southeast of Pavonis Mons, one of Mars' large, extinct volcanoes.

The process of making the Martian environment more habitable has begun. Comets have been harvested as they fall toward the Sun from their home in the distant Oort Cloud. Icy chunks of orbiting comets are being broken off and sent to the surface to increase water vapor and air density.

But the thin atmosphere is still unkind, blowing up dust storms which plague the settlers. As you investigate this environment, watch for the meteoric streaks of the falling ice chunks, and make sure you look out for the dust storm which seems to be circling this base. (You can track the storm from one of the Viewpoints.)

This world grew out of and is inspired by my work on the IrishSpace Project. Dome structure courtesy Robert M. Free (Grafman's Dome Generator).
