IrishSpace

Introduction

"The Voyage of the SS Jeanie Johnston II", originally produced for display on dedicated computers, has been adapted to view on the Internet. By using a Java applet that provides streaming audio, we have managed to transform the project for World-Wide Web viewing. Early versions used a different applet that no longer functions, so the project has been rebuilt. In the years since 1997, the Hubble Space Telescope and several robotic spacecraft have provided better and better images of the planets. The current version takes advantage of those new visions. Click the link at the top of the left-hand column to view what has been called "the first VRML epic".

Otherwise, this is the IrishSpace Project archive. IrishSpace was a volunteer effort to create a VRML Space Exhibit for the Children of Ireland. The project resulted in a multimedia space adventure in which a group of future emigrants set out from Earth aboard the Jeanie Johnston to settle the Solar System.

Project Description

IrishSpace was formed as a tightly focused, short duration project (roughly January to April, 1997) to create a VRML Space Exhibit. This exhibit was hosted in the Kerry County Museum, Tralee Ireland during the months of April to November of 1997. The exhibit opened on April 17th to great fanfare and local media acclaim, particularly since the honorary host for the opening was American astronaut Neil Armstrong.

Both NASA and ESA had provided, free-of-charge, static exhibits and video material for the exhibition - the first of its kind ever mounted in Ireland. Volunteers for IrishSpace created the VRML Space Exhibit.
